Representing the UK's essential minerals sector

We bring the UK’s minerals industries together so homes are built, roads are laid, fields are fertilised, clean water flows, renewable energy is powered and everyday products keep moving.

The entire economy of the UK relies on minerals

UKMIG represents more than 99% of the UK’s essential minerals by tonnage. From aggregates and clays to industrial sands and metals, these resources are the backbone of housing, infrastructure, manufacturing and clean energy and cannot be substituted at scale.

We provide a shared voice for the sector: promoting its essential role in society and the economy, supporting sustainable domestic supply, and championing policies that protect expanded future capacity.

The UK's essential minerals

Key issues

Supply can’t be assumed

Minerals must be planned, monitored and managed through effective planning and regulation.

Home-grown supply

Most essential minerals are produced in the UK, reducing reliance on imports and supporting resilience.

Economic contribution

Minerals represent the largest material flow in the UK economy, supporting jobs, growth and investment.

Essential to daily life

Essential minerals are required in large volumes for the materials and infrastructure we all rely on every day. They complement critical minerals, which play a vital role in high-value technologies and specialised industries.

Public understanding

Too often, minerals are overlooked compared with the industries that depend on them. Improving awareness is vital to ensuring a steady and adequate supply.

Our Priorities

Canary Wharf London

Growth & Development

Minerals provide the raw materials for housing, schools, hospitals, transport, national infrastructure and a wide range of industries. A steady, reliable supply is essential to investment and growth.

Nature Recovery

Although mineral extraction covers less than 0.5% of UK land, restored sites deliver high-quality habitats and measurable biodiversity gains.

Wind Mills

Net Zero

Offshore wind, new nuclear, grid upgrades and low-carbon construction all rely on mineral-based materials. Recognising this is vital to the UK’s transition.
